When Harriet
Hargrave
<PHOTO> first started showing her heirloom style quilts in 1982, it caused
quite a stir. At that point in time machine quilting was considered unthinkable
on a "hand" made quilt. Machine quilting was something on comforters
that you bought at the store! The feathers, stippling, and echo quilting on
Harriet's quilts turned thousands of quilters onto the possibilities offered by
their sewing machines. Harriet's book Heirloom Machine Quilting is the
industry standard and the most commonly used workbook for beginning machine
quilting classes. She has just rewritten it for the publication of the 4th
edition, to be released at this conference in June, 2004. Harriet has been
traveling internationally since 1984, spreading the word and teaching thousands
and thousands of people the joys and rewards of heirloom style machine quilting
n a home sewing machine. She was chosen as one of the 88 Leaders of the Quilt
World in 1994, nominated for the Quilters Hall of Fame in 2003 (pending), was a
finalist for the All-American Quilter honor, and internationally recognized as
the "fairy godmother" of machine quilting. She is the author of Mastering
Machine Appliqué, Art of Classic Quiltmaking (co-authored with Sharyn Craig), and From Fiber to
Fabric. She has owned and operated Harriet's Treadle Arts for 23 years, and
travels extensively teaching and lecturing.
